Meet Penny, Founder of Pen To Blade

At Pen To Blade, I believe every client deserves a set of brows that not only enhance their natural beauty but also elevate their confidence. I’m Penny, and my journey into the world of semi-permanent makeup and fine line tattooing started with a passion for precision and artistry. I started this business whilst I was at Leeds Arts University studying a bachelors degree in Visual Communication.

With over 6 years of training and hands-on experience in semi-permanent makeup, I’ve honed my craft to specialise in creating bespoke, natural-looking brows that perfectly frame your face. Every treatment is designed with you in mind—your face shape, style, and personality are always at the forefront of my work. My goal is simple: to give you brows that feel like you, but better.

The Different Techniques

Microblading

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup that enhances the appearance of your brows by creating ultra-fine, hair-like strokes that mimic natural eyebrow hairs. Using a handheld tool with a series of tiny needles (the “blade”), pigment is delicately implanted into the skin to fill in sparse areas, define shape, or create entirely new brows.

Unlike traditional tattooing, microblading is designed to fade naturally over time, allowing for adjustments as your face and style evolve. The results are soft, natural, and tailored specifically to your facial features and preferences. With proper care, microbladed brows can last 12–18 months before needing a touch-up.

Microblading is perfect for anyone wanting fuller, more defined brows without the daily effort of pencils or powders—offering long-lasting beauty and confidence with every glance.

Ombre Brows

Ombré brows, also known as powder brows, offer a beautifully soft, gradient effect—darker at the tail and gradually lighter toward the front. This technique is created using a gentle machine method, resulting in a powdery, filled-in look that mimics the appearance of makeup while still feeling natural. Ombré brows are ideal for clients who love a more defined, sculpted brow or have oily or mature skin types. The result is clean, symmetrical, and long-lasting luxury.

Combination Brows

Combination brows blend the best of both worlds: the fine, hair-like strokes of microblading with the soft shading of a machine technique. This creates a fuller, more defined look while still maintaining a natural appearance. Ideal for clients with sparse or uneven brows, combination brows add dimension and depth for a polished finish that lasts. It’s the perfect option if you want brows that look effortlessly flawless—up close and from a distance.

Following what you have naturally & enhancing at the same time, microblading is perfect for adding hair strokes and giving you that perfect shape!

These heal 40-50% lighter after the first appointment and about 20% after the top up, they always seem red and a little swollen to begin with but that cools down within a couple of hours.

If you pencil your brows in everyday then this is the perfect technique for you! Wake up and you’re good to go🫶🏼

I always do the fronts lighter so that they heal really natural and avoid the ‘blocky’ look as you can see in every example✍🏼

First thing to look at when getting permanent makeup are the healed results. This is what they’re going to look like 95% of the year, the other 5% is when they’re freshly done and going through the healing process.

After this first appointment they will both heal softer and natural, the top up appointment is when we will decided to keep them natural or fill them out a bit more 🤍

I ALWAYS start off a lot lighter and not as full as we can build up on this once you’ve got used to the full healing process x

Brows to suit you😏

Brows are not a one size fits all! There’s many factors which determine the shape, the main one being your face shape! Another is age, the ends of the tail should be lifted and not an upside down ‘U’ shape as this can drag your eyes down.

I do offer free consultations where you can ask me anything and I’ll let you know which shape would suit you best ☺️

My lovely client had to get laser removal to start again. This happens when the artist has either gone too deep or over saturated the brows!

The laser took two sessions to get rid of enough pigment for me to work over. It left a soft hue but I thought this would be perfect to give the nanoblading a base colour.

I can’t wait to see these healed, what a difference already 🥰

The craziest before and after the first appointment!! I used microblading (hairstrokes) at the front where the hair was missing and blended it in with the ombré (machine) to create the most natural brow🙈

These will still soften about 50% the first time and the top up is when I can build up the colour depending on desired outcome ✨

This has been an idea for a long long time and just become a reality thanks to my amazing fiancée and his friend David (Pez Interiors) highly recommend! There’s a waiting area, treatment area and toilet. There’s also free parking right outside and a bus stop round the corner☺️
This means I’ll be a little more flexible with days and be able to work every other Saturday☺️

I have tried to contact everyone who’s booked in with the new address🫶🏼 I won’t be leaving Harrogate so don’t stress about that🤍

Jokes aside please please follow aftercare as perfect results are like 60% artist work and 40% aftercare!
Just a couple of reminders;
Don’t pick the scabs🙈 they only flake for a couple of days and trust me it’s worth leaving them alone!
Cover your brows if you get sunbeds or put factor 50 on them as they fade them dramatically.
Avoid putting retinol on the brows as the skin thins and rejuvenates which will fade the brows.

Also you’ll go to jail😉

How to ensure your brows heal perfectly✍🏼

You’ve invested good money in these gorgeous new eyebrows, so naturally you’ll want to get the best value from your investment. Helping your eyebrow tattoos to stay sharp and nicely coloured means you’ll need to take care of them long term too, although really this care is fairly minimal. We recommend:

• Always using suncream, as sunlight will fade your semi permanent eyebrow tattoos
• Avoid using anti-aging creams in the area, as they can affect your tattoos
• Avoid certain skin treatments on the brows, such as chemical peels, facial scrubs, laser rejuvenation, microdermabrasion and others
• If you plan a skin treatment, tell your beautician about your permanent eyebrow tattoo

Remember to book your colour boost yearly/ every couple of years so they last even longer 🫶🏼

All the other brows are SPMU (semi-permanent makeup) and are combination of nano blading and ombre ☺️

I always go a lot more natural at the first appointment as we can always build up on the top up (if needed!)

This way you can get used to the colour and the healing process and they also heal 50% lighter after the first appointment! The perfect base to build up on☺️

Little snippets from an ombré brow appointment☺️

After a consultation where we talk through everything you’d want after the brow appointment (natural, defined, ease and/ or symmetry) I then get into mapping the brows.

This is a crucial step where I make sure you’re 100% happy with the shape before I do anything. That would be the time to tweak it if needs be.

I start on the brows & make sure you’re completely comfortable before I carry on. If you’re worried about the feeling then Emla numbing cream is amazing (needs to be applied 20 mins before the appointment)

& voila, beautiful brows🤭

What is ombré brow? Ombré, also known as Powdered Brows, are a semi-permanent eyebrow styling technique that creates a soft shaded brow pencil look. It can be built up to my clients desired outcome, which is a perfect versatile treatment.

How long have people been using this technique?
This amazing technique, first developed in Asia, has been around for decades and has been gradually improving over the years. It gives great definition & depth to the eyebrows.

Q: Will it look natural?

Absolutely. Each brow style is customized to your face shape and desired look. Whether you prefer something ultra-natural or more defined, we’ll tailor the treatment to you. I always go a lot lighter and softer at the first appointment as we can always build up on the colour- even at the end of the appointment I'd rather keep adding colour than going bold and dark straight away.

Q: Does it hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort. You can buy some Emla numbing ccream from anny chemist and apply is 20-30 mins before the appointment.

Q: How long does it take?

Your first appointment typically lasts 1 and a half hours, including another consultation, mapping, and treatment. Touch-ups are shorter and scheduled 4-6 weeks after your initial session.

Q: What’s the healing process like?

You can expect minor flaking or scabbing in the first week. Full healing usually takes around 4–6 weeks. Aftercare is key, and you’ll receive detailed instructions to support the process.

Q: How do I choose the right style?

Don’t worry—we’ll help you decide during your consultation based on your skin type, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
